Weddings

''Love is the sweetest thing

What else on earth could ever bring

 Such happiness to

 ev'rything

 As Love's old story.

 Love is the greatest thing

The oldest yet, the latest thing

I only hope that fate may bring

 Love's story to you.''

Legendary crooner Al Bowlly first sang those words in 1932, and they epitomise love, whatever your age. They have a timeless appeal. Not only are they still being sung at weddings today, it's possible for a bride to arrive in a wedding car from the same era. Romance has never gone out of fashion. I truly believe that a marriage should be for life.

"I can't compare you to a star

And there's no flower as pretty as you are

The way you smile, the way you walk

The way you laugh and the way you talk

 Nothing, can compare to you.

 I can't compare you to a jewel

And if somebody tried they'd be a fool

How you shine, in your own way

Turn my dark nights into day

 Nothing, can compare to you.''

The above lyrics are from the 1960's, and they perfectly sum up what many of us, myself included, feel for our Husband or Wife. And Gospel singer CeCe Winans summed it up like this:

''I can tell by the way you smile

I can feel it in your touch

And I knew this heart of mine

This time would fall in love

All the hopes and promises given

And the pain that life can bring

Will build our will and committment

 To Face Anything

I will love you faithfully, forever unconditionally
And my love I promise you
 Everything I have is yours
You're everything I prayed and waited for
And my love I promise you

Now we begin our life today
And though we've only just begun
The quest until we're old and gray

Is the vow to live as one

Through the desert winds that blow
I'll walk you through the winters cold
I'll be there to keep the fire alive
And when each passage we endure
We will stay strong, we can be sure
 Our love survives.''

This song is the ultimate expression love for our beloved ones, and sums up the very reasons why we marry in the first place, namely that the way we live our lives as an extension of our unfailing love, commitment and devotion to that special someone in our lives. As Elvis Presley sang in 1970:

''When no-one else can understand me

When everything I do is wrong

You give me hope and consolation

You give me strength to carry on

And you're always there to lend a hand

 In everything I do,

That's the wonder, the wonder of you.''
